You can now see The Hot Rock in your home
At the very start of this year, I saw the Robert Redford caper The Hot Rock (1972). This movie is very good, but until recently it was kind of hard to see without performing some shenanigans, I'm told.
I was only able to see it because some friends got professional help securing a theater screening for their joint birthdays. Part of the reason they did this is that they wanted their friends to see The Hot Rock... but it was too hard to see!
Well, now you can see it here if you are in the US. I would not actually recommend getting Amazon Prime in order to see this - it's not worth it for a variety of reasons, and you can probably figure out another way to see this if you're committed to not sending Bezos any dollars. (Every time a hard to find, long-out-of-print movie comes out on streaming, it gets easier to watch it without, ah, sending the platform holder any dollars, let's say.)
But if you have a friend who still has Prime, and you can go to their house and convince them to watch a Robert Redford heist where the whole movie is just constant heisting, a heist with like three or four heists in it... then this is a good one to watch.
I was really blown away by the energy this movie has, by how hard it goes, and by how much STUFF it crams into just 100 minutes. It's a regular-sized movie that feels like three regular-sized movies. It's wild. Also, I love 70s thrillers, particularly if they are funny and/or heists.
Nobody back then had any idea how hard they were cooking with their 70s heisting. This shit probably felt normal to them. Ancient technologies in movie heisting have since been lost!!!
