Moved my website to Digital Ocean
I am extremely bad at hosting my websites, but I have a crap ton of them. They're all S3 buckets on AWS. I understand that this is stupid for someone like me... but around a decade ago I started using AWS to host the online functionality of a weird web game I made, and in the subsequent months I actually set all my websites up alongside it on the same AWS account.
This turned out to be foolish. I've regretted it for years - AWS is too much for me and I hate it has no docs written at bozo level for idiots like me. (Digital Ocean, comparatively, has great Bozo Docs.) Since I just finished my Young Suns contract, however, I finally had time to sit down and start moving my sites off it.
I started with lauramichet.com, which now has a proper www subdomain and should be less stupid for me to update. I believe I have set up the redirect to blog.lauramichet.com correctly, and I believe that this post will appear properly in the RSS feed readers of everyone who follows this blog. (In a way, this is a test of that, haha!) However DNS shit always fills me with a deep dread and I assume I forgot to do SOMETHING important here.
I'm going to slowly begin moving everything around and culling the joke sites I no longer feel strongly about. I will definitely leave up basketballsintrafficcones.com, though.
Every time I try to do anything with AWS, I am always cowed and humbled and terrified by the geologic strata of ignorance I discover within myself. The process of getting my files OUT OF S3 is what took the longest for me - I did not have AWS CLI set up correctly because I'd been using the web interface for a decade. So I had to figure that out, and figure out my credentials for that, etc etc etc. Nightmare!! It took me three hours to get everything off S3 and about ten minutes to set up the site on Digital Ocean.
Anyway, if you actually do this shit for a living, I probably seem like a super idiot to you!! However it's probably worth remembering that a ton of complete idiots who work in other fields are wrestling with web development in their spare time in order to participate in "the indie web" at all. Bozos are eternal. We will always be here... We need the bozo level documentation...
